USA Independence Day Story

The country celebrates American Independence Day on 4th July 1776, as it represents the Declaration of Independence that further enabled the birth of the USA as an independent nation. However, this was not the day when the Continental Congress made the decision about the declaration of Independence or started the American Revolution.

However, on 4th July 1776, the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence document and circulated it among the delegates. This date was included in the final copy of the document as well as on the fancy handwritten copy signed in August by the delegates. In addition, this date was also printed on the Dunlap broadsides also known as original printed copies of Declaration of Independence document; and they were distributed throughout the nation.

However, until the 1830s when the printed copies with this date were circulated again all over the nation, the people did not celebrate this holiday. As awareness increased, in 1870 the Congress first declared 4th July as the national holiday as part of a bill in order to recognize various holidays such as Christmas. In addition, Congress passed some other bills about this holiday both in 1939 and 1941. Thus, in this way, the date became synonymous with the Declaration of Independence and American Independence Day.

Independence Day USA Anthem

Originally known as “Defense of Fort M’Henry”, the American Independence Day song lyric “The Star-Spangled Banner” was written by Francis Scott Key, a famous poet in 1814. He was inspired by the sight of the American flag that was still flying proudly over Fort McHenry even after heavy British bombardment.

The American Independence Day song lyric encapsulates the spirit of the American people who fought tooth and nail to get their independence from the colonial rulers.  The song describes the site where the American flag is fluttering and the Americans are celebrating freedom, and are in a celebratory mood.

The song goes on to describe the ecstasy and the emotions of the American people after being liberated after a long and agonizing war with the colonial rulers.

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
