The month of November is the 11th month of the calendar year in the Gregorian calendar that we use today. Whereas the in the old Roman calendar it was the 9th month of the calendar year till January and February were added by the King known as Numa. In the old Roman calendar it had 30 days but when January and February were added, the number of days of the month was reduced to 29. The reform was later made by Julius Caesar in the Julian calendar when he added another day to the calendar to make it 30 days.  Thus the Julian calendar is the same as the Gregorian calendar when it comes to the number of days and the sequence of the months in the calendar year. The name of the month comes from the Latin word ‘novem’ meaning nine, as it was the ninth month in the old Roman calendar. It is the month of late autumn in the northern hemisphere and marks the beginning of the winter season whereas in the southern hemisphere it marks the beginning of the summer season as in the month of late spring. The month is symbolized by things like;

  • Citrine and Topaz represents friendship, and are the birthstones for the month of November
  • Chrysanthemum is the birth flower of the month
  • The zodiac signs are Scorpio till the 21st November and Sagittarius starting from November 22nd.
