The United Nations holds peace and justice in the world and protects the human rights of all irrespective of their skin, race or religion. The United Nations have proclaimed many days in honor of certain people and issues. These days are there to raise awareness of issues that are in our society. One of the many days in the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery that is observed every year on the 2nd of December since 1885. The day aims to raise awareness on the modern kinds of slavery that includes child labor, forced or bonded labor, human trafficking and many other forms of slavery. Around a million children are trafficked every year for the purpose of cheap child labor or sexual exploitation. Back in the day in 1949, The United Nations had a convention for the Suppression of Traffic in Persons and the exploitation of the prostitution of others. This day is proclaimed in order to remember that convention.
How to observe it?
The modern form of slavery goes against the Charter of the Human Rights and is one of the leading issues of the society today. On this day the educational institutes, government and non-government organisations get together and hold meetings and seminars focusing on stopping slavery and educating the people on the rights that they deserve. History of slave trade and issues related to slavery are shared with the public and the public is taught on how to protect their rights.
