December is the 12th month of the Julian and Gregorian calendar meaning it marks the end of the calendar year.  It is the final month which brings an end to the calendar year. It is a time to plan for new beginnings and leave the past behind. The month has a total of 31 days in the Gregorian and the Julian calendar. In the 10-month Roman calendar it was still the last month of the year with 31 days but later when a reformed was made by king Numa the calendar was change to 12 month calendar, at that time the month had only 29 days. Julius Caesar added 2 more days to the month making it have 31 days in total. The name was given to the month according to the old Roman calendar. The name December was derived from the Latin word ‘decem’ meaning ten. As it was the 10th month thus was named as December. The seasons linked to the month are winter and summer. In the northern hemisphere the month marks the beginning of the winter season where as it marks the beginning of the summer season in the southern hemisphere.  The symbols for the month of December are;

  • Narcissus is the birth flower of the month
  • Turquoise, tanzanite and zircon are the birthstones of the month
  • The western zodiac signs for the month of December are Sagittarius and Capricorn. On the 21st of December Sagittarius ends and the next day on the 22nd of December Capricorn begins

Just like all other months of the year many events take place in this month as well. As it is the last month of the year that has the best Christian Holiday, the Christmas, which is celebrated on the 25th of December. Along with this many other events are celebrated such as;
